Weird Helga was a character-driven BuzzFeed animated web series created by Lizz Hickey that follows odd-couple twins Helga and Honey and the coming-of-age problems they face as ‘blossoming’ young adults. Weird Helga’s episodes tackle topics of body positivity, women’s issues, identity, and relationships—all the while preserving the unmistakable grime and glamour that make her one-of-a-kind.
What makes Lizz’s approach to coming-of-age content and characters unique is her ability to marry unconventional humor with stories dedicated to the hopes, dreams, fears, and even nightmares that can be commonplace in modern day womanhood. Her untraditional stories provide audiences with a sense of personal recognition, lightheartedness, and reassurance that life is, in fact, very weird.
Lizz also ensured that there was no one “style” or “look” for the Weird Helga universe. Helga animators had their own styles and Lizz never wanted to hide what makes them unique. For example, some shorts feature smooth, clean lines while others showcase a wildly textured look. This kept Helga’s world looking fresh while giving animators freedom to be themselves.
