CHRISTINA FIDLER

Animator for Weird Helga

Christina Fidler (she/they) has been an Animator at BuzzFeed since 2022. She pitches, writes, boards, and animates shorts for Weird Helga. Like many animators, Christina realized growing up that there were real people behind some of her favorite cartoons. In their personal work, they draw a lot of inspiration from indie animators like Chintis Lundgren, Victoria Vincent, and Sally Cruikshank. Other inspirations include music, personal experiences with trauma, and surrealist comedy: “It's a balance between the real, deeply painful and universal human experiences we endure and the humor we can find in them. I operate to a ‘sad little clown’ type beat.”  Christina’s hope is that people feel seen, less alone, and will even share a bit of themselves because art is a catalyst for connection (and she LOVES to make people laugh). What they love about working with the Animation Lab is the creative liberty with how they can design backgrounds, draw pre-existing characters, and push absurd situations within a really flexible universe.

Christina’s advice to aspiring animators is, “Just keep drawing and ignore the rules of what ‘can’ and ‘can't’ be made. Be kind and conscious of what you put out into the world, but also have faith in your own voice and perspective on the world.”

From Brooklyn, NY, they now live in Los Angeles. Christina hates the cold so she’s happy to be somewhere that is more predictable and consistent in its climate. She loves cooking and baking (she makes her own peanut butter, tortillas, and even tried lacto-fermenting her own cream soda...um, YUM). They were also a swing dancer pre-COVID and enjoy doing things that don't involve staring at a screen! Christina’s also determined to learn how to play the accordion.
