LIZZ HICKEY
Animation Creative Director for Weird Helga
Lizz Hickey (she/her) has been at BuzzFeed since 2015, before the Animation Lab existed! Lizz started her career in animation as a cartoonist and comic artist. She is currently a Creative Director and the creator of Weird Helga and co-creator of The Land of Boggs. She hopes her work makes others feel less alone and makes people chuckle. Lizz’s favorite part of her job is the freedom to create, which she thinks is a rarity in Hollywood – and she loves working with a super talented team of artists who inspire her everyday! In five years, Lizz hopes the team will be selling widely-popular animated shows.
Lizz’s advice for aspiring animators is, “Don't hold back! And use reference as much as you need to - there's nothing wrong with it! (I love to trace :)”
From Syracuse, New York, Lizz spent many years in Los Angeles, and is now back in her home city with her family. She has produced pilots for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, including Jammers in 2015 based on her original comics. Lizz loves that everything in Syracuse is a ten-minute traffic-free drive away. Also, she loves the changing seasons.
