SYD SANDERS

Illustrator for Weird Helga

Syd Sanders (she/her) has been an Illustrator at the Animation Lab since 2019, mostly working with Weird Helga. She has a background in comics, but chose to go the animation route after rewatching shows like Cartoon Network’s Chowder. The expressiveness and movement in that show was something she was drawn to. Since Syd was a child, she loved drawing and it was easy for her to decide to pursue some sort of creative career. She simply wants people to see her work and think it’s cool or fun! At the Animation Lab, she creates grid posts and stories for Instagram, final backgrounds for animators’ videos, the occasional gif and storyboard, and sometimes merch. When she started, she thought she would only be doing art for Instagram, but her role has expanded and she helps out in many ways, including doing work with the other shows of the Lab.

From Kansas City, Syd is now based in Los Angeles. LA is cool for many reasons, but the food scene has to be her favorite part – With so many cultures and food trucks, she’d eat her way through the city if she could. Syd loves trashy reality TV and is currently obsessed with any of the 90 Day Fiance spin-offs and Real Housewives of Potomac.

FROM THE TEAM

“Syd is a talented, multifaceted illustrator who is incredibly reliable and curious. It is a privilege working with her!”

“Have you ever been to a particularly bad open mic standup night?  You and your friends, who all have exquisite taste in comedy, are cringing through each performer. You desperately want to leave, but your friend group is the only audience, and you've been raised to be nice and polite so you grit your teeth and keep forcing laughs. Finally, the show ends, and you guys silently file out of the venue and stand in a circle on the sidewalk. Uneasy silence hovers over the group, until one person, maybe you, cracks and starts genuinely laughing at the absurdity of the situation. The rest of the group joins in, and you all share this cathartic laughter together. Maybe the event itself was an L, but it's all a W in the end when you can share the experience with your good friends. That's working with Syd.”
